So I wanted to try to make one of those square photos....anyone understand why (at least from what I've noticed) a picture cropped into a square magically gets 5 times as many favourites? 
But beyond that, any opinions? Keep cropping or stick to my usual style?

I'm not sure about the square-thingy, too. 
Maybe it's because the format is quite unusual compared to other sizes which makes it more interesting for viewers. I'd say in this case it was a good decision to use it. Your photograph looks great and I like the title you've chosen. Also, the colours are well balanced. Perhaps you could try to bring out the red and yellow tones a little bit more, but that's just personal taste. Keep it up, you have some really amazing macro shots in your gallery! :]
